I suppose it's true that books "do not command the center of the cultural stage." TV and film have been doing that for a while and now cyberspace is either the stage or in command of the stage or the two are inextricable. But you can throw a book at someone else's head. You can throw cyberspace, a TV and a movie at someone else's head, but not in the same way and without the satisfying feel (the weight of the book leaving the hand, the arc of the trajectory, the thwack or thump, depending on the book and the head at which it's thrown).
This post is not living up to its title.
By that title I mean that the wings of the cultural stage, where the book now lurks and I think has lurked for a while, is not necessarily a bad place to be. Stages are good and their centers are as well but there is much to be said for wings and standing in them.

You go girl!
In this media saturated, "the untelevised life is not worth living" mad culture of ours, the wings are the safest place to stay away from poop landing with a thud on our heads. I'm going to start smoking again. Me, too. I think it's time to get off the planet.
